John R. Donaphon, 88, passed away November 8, 2012 at Maris Grove, Glen Mills, Pa. Born in Chester, Pa, he was a resident of Brookhaven, Pa, Cape May, NJ, and Stuart, Fl. He graduated from Chester High School, class of 1942. He served in the US Navy during WWII. He worked at Sun Oil in Marcus Hook, Pa, as an operator for 40 years before his retirement. He served on the Brookhaven Recreation Committee as the treasurer and was also a lifetime member of the Parkside Fire Company where he received the Jim Greaves Fireman of the Year award in 1983. He was a former member of Brookhaven Baptist Church and served on the Board of Trustees. He retired and moved to Stuart, Fl, and summered in Cape May, NJ.
He enjoyed fishing, playing golf, and was an avid Philadelphia sports fan. He was a member of the Cape May National Golf Club and on July 14, 2004 he made a hole in one at the age of 80. He was also a member of the Board of Directors and started and ran the annual golf tournament.
He was predeceased by his former wife Helen; his wife of 57 years Grace Donaphon who passed away in 2011; and his sister Janet Jennings.
He is survived by his sons John (Jean) Donaphon and Rodger (Jonelle) Donaphon; his step-sister Nancy Bird; 4 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren.
Funeral service Wednesday 11:30am at the Bateman-Allen Funeral Home, 4220 Edgmont Ave., Brookhaven, Pa, 19015. Visitation Wednesday 10:30-11:30am at the funeral home.
