Robert James Smith, 76, passed away at home on April 14, 2025. Bob, as he was known to those close to him, was born in Philadelphia, raised in Folcroft, and was currently residing in Glen Mills with his wife, Joann (Nestor) Smith. Bob graduated from Sharon Hill High School in 1966 and earned degrees (including his Master’s) in electrical engineering from Widener University. Bob’s first work experience was with Bell Telephone, and then he moved on to work for Sun Shipbuilding & Dry Dock as a draftsman. He worked the last 30 years of his career as an electrical engineer for Salem Nuclear in NJ and was called back after his retirement to act as a consultant and mentor to the young engineers just beginning their careers at Salem.
Bob enjoyed being active and playing sports throughout his life including football, baseball, bowling, pickleball, and lately concentrating on golf. He was active in his church, Concord-Liberty Presbyterian, where he served in many capacities, including the worship team, video team, search committee and an elder.
Bob especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends where he was usually the life of the party. He was known for the family/friends reunion he held at his home for many years called “Smithfest”. Another big event for the past 25 years he enjoyed was going to Sanibel with a group of close friends. He also enjoyed retirement times with family in Jensen Beach, FL and Pot Nets in DE. He was very supportive of his nieces and nephews (and great nieces and nephews) in their endeavors involving school, acting, sports and family outings.
Bob is survived by his loving wife Joann; his sister Peggy, who married Bob’s friend from childhood, Bill Holter; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. He is also survived by Joann’s family, the Nestors, who made him one of their own.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation on Monday (April 21, 2025) from 9:00-10:30am at the Concord-Liberty Presbyterian Church, 256 Bethel Rd., Glen Mills, PA, 19342.
