Velva (Vel) Patricia Moffitt, 72, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving children on September 11, 2023. Vel was born on October 24, 1950, in Upland, PA. She was the daughter of the late Velva May Dougherty and the late John Tenuto. She was married to the love of her life, Jon, (G. Jonathan Moffitt Jr) in December of 1973; until his passing in 1994. Her love for him has been unwavering through time and distance over these past nearly 30 years.
Vel was a selfless woman, who always put others before herself. Even during her own most trying times, she was a calming presence for everyone around her, protecting her family fiercely with love and compassion. Her warm heart showed through in all that she did.
Vel was a loving wife, devoted mother, sister, aunt, cousin, friend and a true angel on earth. She will forever be remembered for her loving spirit, selfless nature and kind heart. Vel enjoyed teatime with her family and friends, a good Skip-Bo card game, going to the theater, watching PBS dramas, and spending time with her grandchildren whom she loved so very deeply – Gideon (15), Claire (11), Colin (11), Vivian (9) and Evie (7).
The eighth of nine children, Vel graduated from Chester High School before going to work as a bank teller in Media, PA. It was at this time she would meet and marry her husband, Jon, then moving to Glen Mills, PA in 1977, where they raised their four children, son G. Jonathan Moffitt III (Kathryn Griep); twin daughters Heather Moffitt (Kevin Reagan) and Jennifer Mayer (Jared) and son, James Moffitt (Lindsay).
She is survived by three of her brothers: Michael McGinnis (Mickey), Jack McGinnis and John Tenuto, and by her sister-in-law, Helene McGinnis, along with countless nieces and nephews. Vel is predeceased in death by her sister, Helen Browne (Joe); her brothers, David McGinnis (Linda), Leonard McGinnis and George McGinnis.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of the Alliance Cancer Center at Riddle Memorial Hospital for the excellent care they provided which helped give Vel the precious gift of time to spend with family and friends, and for that, they will be forever grateful.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Celebration of Life on Saturday, September 16, 2023 from 5:00-7:00 PM at the clubhouse of ‘Traditions at Ridley Creek’ (1200 Creekside Drive, Brookhaven, PA, 19015).
The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made on Vel’s behalf to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Arrangements handled with care by the Bateman-Allen Funeral Home, Brookhaven, PA. Online condolences can be sent via www.batemanallenfuneralhome.com.
